Meeting Attendees:

We had a very nice meeting with Rep. Tim Mahoney (D-16-FL) who focused most of his attention on our young advocate, Nicholas.Ā  He listened intently to Nicholas as he described JDRFā€™s mission and his life with diabetes.Ā  Since Nicholas was battling a virus, he found himself going low during the meeting, tested his blood sugar, and had a juice box.Ā  This was a good example of his day-to-day routine for the Congressman to witness.Ā  Cindy gave a personal account and background on Type 1 versus Type 2.Ā  Lora thanked the Congressman for his support of the SDP that extended federal funding of Type 1 research, representing 35% of all federal funding.Ā  Mr. Mahoney said he supported JDRF and would do all he could ā€“ however, he encouraged JDRF advocates to remain very vocal now and in the upcoming months as the attention of the President was greatly needed in this and future administrations.Ā  He fears big budget cuts to many NIH funded programs and said it will take much action on our part to reverse this trend.Ā  Though his concern is not directly related to the funding of the SDP, it does impact the overall health of our nationā€™s research efforts. The Congressman then invited us to call on him in D.C. when we are visiting during JDRFā€™s Annual Conference.Ā
