Help the Promise Campaign for Diabetes Awareness Month

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

As most of us know, November marks the start of Diabetes Awareness Month in the United States. As the nation’s attention turns to issues related to diabetes we, as advocates for a cure for type 1 diabetes, can take advantage of this added attention and make sure our Members of Congress are hearing from us about the need to find a cure!

Fortunately for the Promise Campaign, it’ll be a little easier for us to coordinate meetings during Diabetes Awareness Month, not only because of the added attention to diabetes but also because Congress will be heading home twice during November. This is a great time for those of that are interested in organizing a meeting with your Member of Congress. Contact the JDRF Advocacy and Government Relations office at 202-465-4111 or at sshah@jdrf.org and we’ll make sure we get you the necessary resources to help you complete a Promise meeting during November!

Members of Congress are scheduled to be home for the week of Veterans Day and then again for the week of Thanksgiving. Between the two breaks, we have 14 possible days or almost half the month, during which you can help us complete Promise meetings. Below we provide some tips on how to get started:
  1. Find out who your Members of Congress are by clicking here.
  2. Contact the JDRF Advocacy staff using the information above.
  3. The Advocacy staff will provide you with contact information and a template to request a meeting.
  4. We’ll also provide you talking points for Promise meetings. You can also review the talking points by clicking here.
  5. Submit the meeting request to the legislator’s local office. You’ll need to follow up with a phone call to confirm the office received your meeting request.
  6. You’ll need to continue to follow up every three to four days during November to make sure your meeting request is still top-of-mind and hasn’t been pushed aside by other requests.

My daughter, Courtney accepted the Proclamation letter from the Mayor of Murrieta last night declaring November as Diabetes Awarness Month. She was so excited and honored.

About the Promise Campaign

The Promise Campaign is a coordinated effort to schedule and complete as many meetings as possible between representatives and senators and their constituents in their local districts. In addition to building relationships with federal lawmakers, it allows JDRF to continue the momentum and messaging established through our Children's Congress event.
